Melanie Henry is a driving evaluator and speaker on the topics of aging and driving. She is the co-author of the best-selling book Difficult Aging in Place Conversations.  Melanie is an expert in evaluating older drivers and their skillsets.  She is the Founder and CEO of Driver Cognitive Assessment Center, LLC and is a Licensed Driving Instructor and Driver Rehabilitation Professional.  Melanie speaks all over the San Francisco Bay Area as well as nationwide.  She volunteers as an Event Coordinator and Trained Technician for the CARFiT Program in Northern California.il for End of Life Choices California and volunteers her time to support families throughout their exploration of choices at the end of their lives, including being with them on the day of ingestion of MAiD medication.

Susan Gess

End of Life Choices California

Susan Gess, PharmD introduced the organization, End of Life Choices California, and the “no fee” services of personal support and education they provide through a dedicated team of volunteers. Her presentation highlighted two end of life topics: Medical Aid in Dying (MAiD) and Voluntary Stopping Eating & Drinking (VSED) to include their legal context, eligibility requirements, and current practices.

Susan recently retired after 28 years with Kaiser Permanente where she served as a Drug Education Coordinator with over 30 years practice experience in Clinical Pharmacy.  In 2016, when the California End of Life Option Act (often referred to as MAiD) was signed into law, she became the consulting pharmacist for the associated program at Kaiser Permanente Northern California. Susan serves on the Advisory Council for End of Life Choices California and volunteers her time to support families throughout their exploration of choices at the end of their lives, including being with them on the day of ingestion of MAiD medication.

For over ten years, I have worked as a program manager and director with research and non-profit organizations in Latin America and the U.S. I am experienced in data administration, communication, and program management working in a variety of projects alongside disadvantaged populations. Throughout my career, it has been a privilege to listen, work, and collaborate with people from different socioeconomic, cultural, and ethnic backgrounds. I enjoy bringing people together and building bridges among diverse groups by fostering trust and respect. Currently, I am the Community Relations Director for AgeWell PACE. I am honored to be part of an organization that offers comprehensive support to older adults and their caregivers so they can remain safely at home and age with dignity.

Since 1988, Terri has been one of California’s leading advocates helping older Californians. She has designed pioneering programs and services for seniors, and through her geriatric care management company, Aging Solutions, has helped hundreds of families deal with the complex issues navigating the ever-more-complex geography of elder care in the 21st century.

William Foster

William was raised in a small west Texas town by his mother and Grandmother where he learned early on about the importance of being of service to others. His grandmother served and retired from the Department of Health and Human Services, Foster Care division. His mother worked for 30 years as a high school English teacher and teaching adult education. William studied Human Development and Family Studies at Texas Tech University and Behavioral Health Sciences at UC Berkeley. William has been richly rewarded as he has found opportunities to serve those with disabilities and facing life changes. William found his passion for service to the aging population when he accepted a position as Activity Director in a nursing home in the mid-90s. Since then William has served the long-term care community & short[1]term rehabilitation services in both California and Texas.

Carolyn Tucker

As Co-Owner and Outreach Director for HomeWell of the North Bay, every day I have the privilege to coordinate one on one personal care for older adults in our community who want to thrive in the comfort of their own homes.I am the current President of the Marin Home Care Association (MHCA) and have been so for the last 3 years. I am an adviser to referral sources, families, and potential clients of the numerous solutions CA state licensed home care offers that will meet their needs and relieve their challenges. I also actively participate in and contribute to several community organizations that develop educational programs and resources for our local seniors, clients, prospects, community partners, and caregivers.

Matt White

Matt White is a partner of Monty White LLP, a personal injury and civil litigation law firm in San Rafael, California. He lectures and writes extensively for lawyers and law students on mediation, trial practice, ethics, and settlement skills. For each of the past 15 years, he has been recognized as a Northern California “Super Lawyer.” As a panelist with Resolution Remedies, he is frequently appointed by the courts and by lawyers throughout the San Francisco Bay Area to serve as a mediator, arbitrator, and discovery referee. Matt has been an adjunct professor at the University of San Francisco School of Law since 2012.

Phillip Grob

When to Call for a Geriatric Psychiatrist

Dr Grob is a Board-Certified Psychiatrist.  He received his B.A.  from University of Illinois – Chicago and M.D. from State University of New York Downstate Medical Center.  He did his Residency in Psychiatry at Johns Hopkins Hospital and Fellowship in Geriatric Psychiatry at The University of Maryland, where he stayed on as faculty for several years before moving to Sonoma County, California in 2002. He currently sees patients at Sonoma County Behavioral Health Outpatient Clinic and Crisis Stabilization Unit, Creekside Behavioral Health Inpatient Unit and at his Santa Rosa office as well as at various SNFs, RCFEs and homes in the community. Dr Grob discussed common psychiatric conditions in the older population with an emphasis on complicated dementias. He discussed various psychopharmacologic treatments including the potential therapeutic use of cannabis in this population. He hopes the audience will gain a better understanding of various mental health conditions and treatments in older adults and the role a geriatric psychiatrist may play in addressing various mental health ailments.

Marin Villages is Not a Place, It’s Many & More

John joined the Marin Villages Team as executive director in May 2021, after  three decades as a trusted authority and expert to local, state, and national  nonprofit, government, corporate and private philanthropy leaders on  community-building, nonprofit development, and volunteer engagement. For  two decades he led The Volunteer Center in San Francisco and launched the  national Board Match. He previously served as Deputy District Director for  San Jose Congresswoman Zoe Lofgren. Bay Area locally-grown, a graduate  of UC Berkeley with an MBA from Santa Clara University, John lives in  Kentfield with his partner of 26 years. An avid runner, he can be found on  trails throughout Marin. Flag him down, he’ll be glad to stop and say “hello.”

Dr. Diane Hoang

Brain Health

Dr. Diane Hoang is a licensed clinical neuropsychologist who earned her doctoral degree in Clinical Psychology from Nova Southeastern University. She completed her internship at the Southern Oregon VA and postdoctoral fellowship at UC Davis School of Medicine. Dr. Hoang specializes in adult and older adult neuropsychological evaluation. Further, she offers individual cognitive rehabilitation and sleep therapy to holistically address cognitive concerns that testing may reveal. Outside of clinical work, Dr. Hoang is enthusiastic about community outreach and has presented at various educational events to promote the value of neuropsychological services.

Stephanie joined Vivalon in December of 2021. As Director of Healthy Aging Services, Stephanie is responsible for the development of programs and services that support the health and well-being of Marin County’s older adult community. Prior to Vivalon, Stephanie held several roles at Canal Alliance, most recently as Director of Advocacy and Policy. She also served as an independent non-profit consultant, Director of Implementation Services and Director of Global Services Operations at Clarabridge, and Engagement Manager at Market Metrix. Stephanie has a Master’s Degree in Nonprofit Administration from the University of San Francisco, and a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Business Administration from the University of Texas at Austin.

Driving Under the Influence of Dementia:

This 1-hour Continuing Education presentation focuses on the role dementia, memory and executive functioning play on older driver safety. The presentation is supported by current-day, real-life examples as well as academic studies that confirm the correlation between cognitive decline and older driver safety.

Detecting, Differentiating, and Addressing Depression and Dementia in Older Adults

In this class, presenters clarified the distinguishing characteristics of depression and dementia in older adult patients and offered participants tools for accurate diagnosis and treatment options. We learned about mental health challenges facing older adults in Marin County, and gained the confidence to assess and diagnose patients accurately. A resource guide for mental health services for older adults in Marin County was be provided.

April 2022: Emily Summerville

Evidence-Based Fall Prevention Program for Older Adults:

Falls are the leading preventable cause of morbidity, mortality, and premature institutionalization for community-dwelling older adults. Most falls occur in the home, and measurable home hazards are associated with an increased risk of falling. Home hazard removal has been shown to reduce falls among people at high risk of falls. Objectives of this talk include: 1) able to identify the risks factors related to falls, 2) able to identify evidence-based home hazard removal options  3)review of the evidence supporting home hazard removal to reduce falls.

Emily Somerville is a licensed and registered occupational therapist and instructor in Occupational Therapy and Neurology at Washington University in St. Louis. She earned her bachelor’s degree in pre-physical therapy from Covenant College in Lookout Mountain, Georgia, and completed her master’s and doctoral studies in occupational therapy at Washington University in St. Louis. Her interests include promoting the participation of older adults with functional limitations through the provision of intensive, tailored home modification interventions designed to enhance the performance of daily activities in the home and prevent falls. She also has specific interest in helping older adults manage medications independently in the home and examing the impact of medications on fall risk. February 2022: Libby Wood & Tammy Key

Hoarding 101:

This presentation gave an introduction to the causes and effects of challenging disorganization, or hoarding, and provided some insights into the strategies most effective in dealing with the disorder.

Libby Wood is the owner of Senior Settlers, a senior move management company which is frequently called in to deal with hoarding situations.  She is the author of Home of the Brave: or How to Overthrow the Tyranny of Stuff, and a popular speaker on issues related to moving, downsizing, and organizing. Tammy Key is the Operations Manager for Senior Settlers, and holds a qualifying certification from the Institute for Challenging Disorganization (ICD).  Both Libby and Tammy hold certifications from the National Association of Senior and Specialty Move Management (NASMM).

Aging with Finesse: Meeting the Challenge of Aging in a Pandemic

 

Mary L. Flett, PhD, is an author, clinical psychologist and nationally-recognized speaker on aging. She has just published Aging with Finesse, a three-book series of short essays exploring valuing ourselves as elders, connecting with others, and acquiring essential skills for aging well and aging better. She is the Executive Director of the Center for Aging and Values and is launching Five Pillars of Aging, where she will soon be offering online seminars on aging.

October 2021: Richard Caro

Tech-Inhanced Life

Dr. Richard G. Caro has over 30 years of experience at the intersection of technology and business — as startup CEO (Vital Insite); startup CTO (Summit Technology); scientist / inventor; angel investor; and strategic advisor (TangibleFuture) to emerging growth companies in fields such as medical devices; telecom; digital health; and photonics. 

Richard has been responsible for development of a number of successful products; has 24 issued patents; and received a D.Phil. in Physics from Oxford University, where he was a Rhodes Scholar. He is an active member of several Silicon Valley angel investor groups, with a particular focus on the intersection of healthcare, aging, and technology. 

August 2021: Linda M Jackson

Aging Action Initiative

Linda M. Jackson is Program Director of the Aging Action Initiative, which is a collaborative network of over 280 public sector, healthcare and nonprofit organizations working for the well-being of older adults in Marin. Previously, she worked with the Transportation Authority of Marin and the City of San Rafael in long-range planning. Jackson holds an M.S. and M.A. from the University of Texas in Austin and a B.A. from Wellesley College.

July 2021: Dana Lacy Amarisa- Caring Condolences

Be a Bridge Condolences Project

Dana Lacy Amarisa founded the Be a Bridge Condolences Project to help heal conversations with grievers by educating their friends and family about consolation. Amarisa talks about some of the practical yet heart-centered steps detailed in her latest book, Condolences Pocket Guide: What to Say and Not to Say to Grievers. She gives specific examples of how to say helpful condolences right after the loss, when it’s been a while since the loss, when you run into the griever in public, in condolence letters and more!

Rising from the ashes of the loss of her daughter, her father and her son in a 20-month period, Amarisa brings her diverse background as a marketing writer/trainer in technology, a college Spanish teacher and a business owner in Mexico to the heart of helping us learn how to be a bridge over to a grieving friend. Her kind, insightful, straightforward style shines through in her inspiring Q&A sessions.

June 2021: Lori E. Frugoli- Marin County District Attorney

Connecting the Community to the Courthouse

Lori Frugoli is a Marin native and was first inspired to keep Marin safe when she participated in a Law Enforcement Ride-a-Long program while attending Terra Linda High School.  She was one of the first women to volunteer as a Reserve Police Officer in San Rafael and later became a Police Officer for the Santa Rosa Police Department where she chose the Downtown Walking beat in order to meet and learn about her community.  While at Santa Rosa she investigated arsons, fraud and embezzlement cases and served as a member of the Hostage Negotiations Team.

Lori worked her way through law school while working for the Marin County Sheriff’s Office.  In 1990 she became a Deputy District Attorney for the County of Marin and in 2018 she was elected to serve as Marin County’s District Attorney.

Lori has earned many prestigious awards and recognitions including the Champion for Children award from the Jeannette Prandi Children’s Center.  She has earned a reputation in the community for treating all people with respect and professionalism.

Prior to that she led client service for Age Wave Impact. Lori has more than 30 years of advertising, public relations and strategic planning experience.

January 2021: David T. Neuman, MD

HEALTHIER JOINTS MAKE HAPPIER PEOPLE

David T. Neuman, MD FAAOS is the owner and clinical director of NY Sportscare, located in New York City, NY.  The current practice involves orthopedic consulting and his philosophy includes utilizing physical therapy and ‘home’ exercises to help an injured joint recover to a functional state.  A goal as an orthopedic doctor is to help people diminish pain and increase the function of the musculoskeletal system in all people with joints.  

Dr. Neuman has founded and created a joint-health healthcare technology start-up called Pop-doc.com.  It is a premier online musculoskeletal health platform that serves to educate people about the musculoskeletal system, and offers safe, simple and effective web-based joint-health activities and appropriate exercises for those who want to stay as independent as possible, alleviate stress and feel less joint pain.

Anne Grey

Anne was appointed CEO of Vivalon in January of 2021. As CEO, Anne is responsible for the strategic oversight and overall management of Vivalon. Prior to joining Vivalon, Anne was executive director at the Alzheimer’s Association Orange County Chapter, where she rebuilt the chapter from the ground up, making it one of the leading nonprofits in Orange County.

As director of healthy aging, Joanne provides leadership and strategic direction for Vivalon’s mission-driven programs including nutrition services, classes & events, social engagement, and community partnerships. Additionally, Joanne is leading the effort to create partnerships with various healthcare providers in the community for a more holistic approach to healthy aging.

November 2020: Holly Edson MSN RN

Holly Edson MSN RN, is the newest provider at the Preventive Medical Center of Marin. She is a recent graduate of the Family Nurse Practitioner program and San Francisco State University. Holly has been active as a nurse since 1999 working in acute care hospitals in San Francisco. She is passionate about public health and universal healthcare. Holly is happy to deliver prescient information on ways to support people as they age.

In a 30 minute presentation, Holly Edson  presented on vaccination for aging people that was followed by Q&A. Some of the topics she spooke on were:

  • Provided evidence-based information on morbidity and mortality of pneumonia, influenza, and shingles
  • Described the concept of herd immunity
  • Reinforced prevention strategies for influenza and pneumonia outside of vaccination of aging people
  • Explained shingles infection and risk factors
  • Outlined immunization schedule for aging people
  • Explored ways to increase immunization compliance
